THE DUNWICH HORROR/MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE REVIEWED

“The Dunwich Horror” is finally on Blu-Ray and I get to retire my MGM Double Feature DVD. Basically, it’s the same pairing that was on that DVD. An adaptation of Lovecraft told with the panache of Drive-In cinema fare. Dean Stockwell is a great lead, as he dabbles in the Necronomicon in a way that would make Shaggy blush. The fan service paid to the Lovecraft universe is amazing for the time, but it’s just a typical AIP movie. I’d recommend picking up the original story after you watch the film. “Murders in the Rue Morgue” actually improves upon the Poe story for me. Sure, the source novel was considered the first Detective Story in the English language. But, I want more than a killer monkey. I want psycho midgets and Herbert Lom getting weird with it. Grand Guignol rarely gets done right on film, but somehow lowbrow early 1970s appeal captured that sensation. So much blood, gore and oddity for a beloved story! It’s almost enough to make me rejoin Book It at Pizza Hut. Almost.
