MONDO WEIRDO / VAMPIROS SEXOS REVIEWED
“Mondo Weirdo” and “Vampiros Sexos” fits the template of recent AV Theater fare. Starting with “Multiple Maniacs”, I’ve spent the last few weeks delving deep into cult underground cinema getting the HD treatment. So far, so good. It’s amazing how even original 16mm prints can be cleaned up and restored. But, what about the content? Starting with shots of female genitalia slammed against vicious narration might be a bit much.
Still, this is the kind of material that kept me sane as a teenager. Outrageous art for the sake of art produces a response that hits the right people in the brain. When you can look past shock and disgust to see a pioneering heart, then you’ve got something special. These films wear their love for Jess Franco, Kenneth Anger and Godard on their sleeves. But, they do something far more important than sincere imitation. These movies dare audiences to follow them to new plateaus. Be bold and try to keep up.
