THE MILLION EYES OF SUMURU and GIRL FROM RIO REVIEWED
“The Million Eyes of Sumuru” is a spy spoof headlined by Frankie Avalon. Frankie battles with Shirley Eaton, as her plans for world domination grow. Sumuru plans on removing male world leaders with sexy females loyal to her. A million female eyes surrounding the globe and working on Sumuru’s orders and only Frankie Avalon can stop them. Things like this are why I love 60s cult cinema. It was a time when production costs stayed cheap and the films remained remarkable schlock.
“The Girl from Rio” plays like a Jess Franco from the era. Presented uncut on Blu-Ray, the nudity and lesbianism is enough to make you thank Jesus for Jess. Playing as a sequel to Million Eyes of Sumuru, Shirley Eaton returns with all subtext gone. She’s a total lesbian who wants to use an army of lusty women to get rid of men. George Sanders shows up as the kidnapped celebrity nearing the end of his career.
I’m loving these recent double features from Blue Underground. Too often, fans get caught up in horror and grindhouse fare to realize that there are so many subgenres out there. Capitalizing on the sheer glut of espionage and world danger movies surrounding the end of the Connery Bond era is genius. Blue Underground could easily spend the next 3-4 years putting these movies out. Amazing work all around.
