“Mile 22” is a solid action movie. But, it also plays like a narrative to a video game. A foreign cop (Iko Uwais) is trying to stop his corrupt government from seizing six shipments of Cesium 139. The movie implies that it’s bad, but never gives a direct correlation to what it can do. So, I did the research when I got home. Basically, the radioactive Cesium has a stabilized trigger that can produce a Gamma Bomb effect. That’s right, kids. Just like what made the Incredible Hulk.
The guy from the Raid doesn’t want random foreign land to have a bunch of radioactive tumor kids and Hulks running around, so he tips off the Black Ops group that Mark Wahlberg runs. If they can get the materials 22 miles out of the city, then the US government can take possession. Local foreign government gets mad and decides to go after treason cop. Ronda Rousey, random woman from Walking Dead, toupee wearing John Malkovich and Mark Wahlberg are luckily there to save the day.
At times, the film starts to feel like the current crop of Asian action movies storming the marketplace. But, Peter Berg has this way of translating modern action flair into brutal set pieces. It’s not like he’s the best at what he does, but the guy has such a strong working style. At times, the film reminded of his prior work on “The Kingdom”. If you’re an action fan, check it out.
