Marica Hase Reflects on Career, Resilience and Breast Cancer Journey in New Weekly SPA! Interview

Marica Hase is sharing one of the most personal stories of her career in a new Weekly SPA! feature, discussing her rise from gravure model to international performer, the determination that fueled her success and the breast cancer diagnosis that changed her life.
The interview, published by the Japanese magazine, offers an honest look at the work ethic that has defined Hase’s career for years, both before and after her 2019 battle with breast cancer.
Building a Career Through Determination
Long before becoming an internationally recognized performer, Hase learned to create opportunities for herself.
In the interview, she recalls handling much of her own promotion during the early years of her career, refusing to wait for opportunities to come to her.
“I wanted to do autograph sessions, but I couldn’t, so I bought DVDs with my own money and negotiated directly with shops,” Hase said. “I put flyers in tissues and handed them out. I did it all on my own.”
That hands-on approach helped lay the foundation for a career that has since taken her from Japan to Los Angeles while building an international fan base.

Facing Breast Cancer
The conversation also revisits one of the most difficult chapters of Hase’s life.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, she says her immediate concern wasn’t mortality, but how the diagnosis would affect the career she had spent years building.
“Even after being diagnosed with cancer and being told I needed a total mastectomy, my first thought wasn’t the fear of death, but ‘What about my work?’” Hase said.
She ultimately chose reconstructive surgery and remained focused on returning to the career she loved.
“Reconstructive surgery was the obvious thing to do.”
Returning Stronger
Since completing treatment, Hase has resumed filming, convention appearances, interviews and international travel while speaking openly about her health journey.
Rather than avoiding the subject, she has used her experience to encourage honest conversations about breast cancer, recovery and resilience.
That openness has become another defining part of her public identity alongside her work in entertainment.
A Career That Continues to Grow
Today, Hase continues balancing multiple projects that include:
- International appearances
- Creator content
- Convention events
- Media interviews
- Cosplay projects
- Brand collaborations
Her willingness to share both professional successes and personal challenges has helped deepen the connection she has built with fans around the world.
