Magnolia Picks Up Maddie’s Secret – John Early’s TIFF 2025 Hit Sets 2026 Release

Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to Maddie’s Secret, the feature debut from comedian and writer John Early.
The film premiered as the opening night selection of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival Discovery section, earning wide acclaim. Magnolia plans a 2026 theatrical release.

Early stars as Maddie — a food content creator trying to keep her curated image intact while her personal life quietly collapses.
Critics have praised the film as one of the year’s most daring debuts.

IndieWire called it “one of the boldest American movies seen in years,” while The Ringer credited Early’s “reverent and revelatory” approach.
The Wrap described it as “a comedy for our moment.”

What Maddie’s Secret Is About

Maddie starts as a dishwasher before becoming a viral sensation at a trendy food media startup.
Her life looks perfect — with a supportive husband (Eric Rahill), best friend (Kate Berlant), and an endless stash of woman-owned chili crisp brands.
But under the pressure of internet fame, Maddie’s old eating disorder resurfaces, threatening her relationships and sense of self.

The story starts as satire but grows into something more human — an unflinching look at recovery and identity.
The cast includes Claudia O’Doherty, Conner O’Malley, Vanessa Bayer, Kristen Johnston, and more.
Composer Michael Hesslein contributes a slick, synth-heavy score.

Magnolia’s Take

“I cannot imagine a more chic or dignified home for Maddie’s Secret than Magnolia Pictures,” said Early. “I will burst into tears when I see the title card for the first time.”

“We were blown away by how John fuses homage and sendup in such a confident way,” said Magnolia co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley. “Audiences are going to lose it.”

Behind the Scenes

The film was produced by Harris Mayersohn (Rap World), Luca Intili (I Saw the TV Glow), and John Early, with executive producers Chris Quintos Cathcart, Tyler Boehm, Hannah Dweck, Theodore Schaefer, Sarah Herrman, Deb Tam, Matthew Rosenthal, and Marissa Heringer.

Key crew includes cinematographer Max Lakner, editor Danny Scharar (I Think You Should Leave), production designer Gordon Landenberger (Stress Positions), costume designers Kimme Aaberg and Izzy Heller, and choreographer Danielle Polanco.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s John Von Thaden with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.
