LORDS OF DOGTOWN: UNRATED EXTENDED EDITION

LORDS OF DOGTOWN: UNRATED EXTENDED EDITION REVIEWED

“Lords of Dogtown” is the skateboarding prequel. Well, kinda. It’s a biopic about Stacy Peralta and the Z-Boys. Heath Ledge lumbers through the film, as well as the insane volume of cameos that Hardwicke stuffs throughout the film. Still, it’s pretty flat. I haven’t revisited the film since it first hit DVD and there’s a reason for that. It plays like a TV-movie meets an Unsolved Mysteries re-staging. What does that mean?

Well, when you cover history in a dramatic narrative, there’s a neat to entice the audience. It’s one thing to restate historical fact, but it’s another to make audiences feel they’re in the midst of it. When done right, it makes a viewer miss that era or want to learn more about it. When done wrong, it is the movie equivalent of a book report. While there are moments of genius throughout this movie, it can’t shake that dull sheen.

There is an excellent documentary about the same material. Honestly, it should’ve stayed a documentary. Not everything needs a live-action version and that shouldn’t be taken as a knock. More of a warning.
