“Little House on the Prairie” entered its fifth season with a huge focus on the Blind School. After the first dozen episodes, that focus seemed to wean off as nobody really cares about Mary. The rest of the episodes deal with the family picking up an orphan boy, Nellie teaching a kid how to cheat, the emergence of the local newspaper and Mary accepting a proposal. It’s fun and games in a time where a strong cold could kill you.
Some claim that this is the season where things started to go downhill. I don’t believe that, as later years were much worse. This season suffers from the fact that it became The Mary Show and everyone else on the program felt like an afterthought. I’m not sure whether to chalk it up to Landon experimenting behind the camera or something else. But, it wasn’t the greatest narrative choice.
The Blu-Ray comes with a Digital HD copy and a featurette as the special features. The A/V Quality continues to astound for the show’s HD bow. The 1080p transfers are impeccable. Plus, the DTS-HD 2.0 master audio tracks make the most out of the original sound elements. It’s a recommended purchase of Classic Television.
