LAST FACE, THE

THE LAST FACE REVIEWED

“The Last Face” is yet another social drama trying to teach the West why it should care about the rest of the world. It’s a noble effort, but it’s done with the panache of a pink haired SJW screaming it into your face. Well, screaming it while also trying to spit out a romantic melodrama via ventriloquism. Sean Penn used to be a pretty good director. Films like “The Pledge”, “The Indian Runner” and “Into the Wild” showed a possible new Cassavettes emerging from the weeds. Unfortunately, the dude has started to believe his own hype.

For 2 hours and 11 minutes, time will stand still as you watch what could’ve been resolved with time to spare on a CBS hour long drama. Charlize Theron seemingly thinks she’s bringing the Oscar Gold enough to make up for films like “Fast 8”. But, there is no redemption here. While I enjoyed the cast, this is the grossest kinda Hollywood grandstanding that keeps rearing itself whenever anyone wants to get serious on a subject. For every movie that gets it right, there are 20 like this. Ignore this movie and live better.
