“Krystal” is a film about a Magic Pixie Drunk Girl? Rosario Dawson does amazing in the lead, but everyone else only exists to worship her. While I appreciate William H. Macy’s directing efforts, I don’t know what’s going on here. Nick Robinson plays a young man who has a heart problem. He’s shaky at best, but wants to find a way to connect to others. So, he pretends to be an alcoholic to get closer to Krystal. The two bond over the lie, while the other losers in her life come closer.
Everyone else involved in the hospital where Nick Robinson’s character gets helped has an issue or two. Kathy Bates has cancer, William Fichtner has relationship troubles. Basically, everyone is a mess and somehow Krystal has to deal with it all. She handles much of this with ease, but again…what was the point of the movie? One magical woman can do her best to save the world? She’s just as much of a mess as everyone else?
Somehow, she teaches Nick Robinson what it means to be a man. Sadly that seems to be breaking down and putting all of your bullshit on the nearest woman.
