A PRELUDE: TROY THINKS ABOUT FATHER’S DAY
So, I’m sitting in a screening of “Inside Out” on Wednesday listening to a volcano moan about not having a woman. That’s when I realize that I didn’t launch the Gift Guide yet. I put it out of my mind and then whip out my phone after the movie’s over. I scan through my emails and I see that I’m getting dozens of screening contest entries with random as hell Father’s Day gift suggestions. So, I spent the last two days editing it down to something that makes sense. The end result was something that bares a striking semblance to our past gift guides. If it works…it works.
But, I wanted to start this Father’s Day gift guide with a moment of not being such a shill. So, here we go:
WHAT I’D WANT FOR FATHER’S DAY
- A nice lunch at Griff’s.
- Check out the menu. If you’re local, I want to see you there. Just see you, don’t talk to me. I don’t talk while I eat. It’s just a thing.

- Also, if I slip out to see a movie this weekend. Don’t talk there either.
- I’ll talk after the movie to anyone, but you need to shut up when a film is playing. I’ll give a little leeway to kids under the age of 6. After that, you’re on your own.
- Don’t spoil Orange is the New Black Season 3 until Sunday Night. It’s been 9 days at that point and that’s more than enough time to be given.
- Someone to explain Breakout Louisville to me.
- My annual plea to the City of Louisville government to place a Warren’s Louisville building side banner for Warren Oates. Also, U of L and the Louisville Film Society needs to bring back Warren Oates Weekend.

I’m assuming that your father is older and possessing a far greater deal of maturity than you. So, I recommend the following PBS titles.
LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM
April 1975. During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. City after city and village after village fell to the North while the few U.S. diplomats and military operatives still in the country contemplated withdrawal.
With the lives of thousands of South Vietnamese hanging in the balance, those in control faced an impossible choice – who would go and who would be left behind to face brutality, imprisonment or even death.
The Academy Award-nominated “ LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM ,” directed by Rory Kennedy, will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on April 28. The run time of the theatrical version of the film is approximately 100 minutes, and the run time of the extended broadcast version of the film is approximately 120 minutes. The DVD SRP is $24.99 and the Blu-ray SRP is $29.99 . The theatrical version of the program will also be available for digital download.
THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY
“ THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY ,” chronicles the lives of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. It is the first time in a major documentary television series that their individual stories have been interwoven into a single narrative. This seven-part, 14 hour film follows the Roosevelts for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962.
The series encompasses the history the Roosevelts helped to shape: the creation of National Parks, the digging of the Panama Canal, the passage of innovative New Deal programs, the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights abroad. It is also an intimate human story about love, betrayal, family loyalty, personal courage, and the conquest of fear.
Meryl Streep, Paul Giamatti and Edward Herrmann portray the voices of Eleanor, Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt in reading of their personal letters and writings.
“ THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY ” is available on DVD and Blu-ray. The run time of the film is approximately 14 hours on 7 discs . The DVD SRP is $99.99 and the Blu-ray SRP is $129.99 . The DVD and Blu-ray both include special features – 13 bonus videos, making of “The Roosevelts,” and deleted scenes with an introduction by Ken Burns.
There is also a companion CD soundtrack available, featuring original music composed by David Cieri, who worked with Ken Burns on “Prohibition,” “Baseball: The Tenth Inning,” and “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” This CD features 19 pieces that are an integral part of the film, as well as three FDR speech excerpts. The compositions featured on the CD are meant to do justice both to the Roosevelts’ formidable public achievements and to their complex interior lives. The run time of the CD is approximately 48 minutes and its SRP is $18.99 .

- Fathers Day at the Zoo: Dads get in free
- Wizard of Oz free outdoor screening at Funtown Mountain in Cave City
- Free Pig Roast and Movie at El Camino, 10pm (this is every Sunday at 10 PM)
- Tee time at a nice golf course that he doesn’t get to play very often, maybe with another buddy or two of his and their kid(s) – maybe a friend of his whose kids do not live here would be nice too, include them for Father’s Day
- This is Kentucky after all… take Dad to one of the distilleries for a tour. Jim Beam, Maker’s, Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, etc etc… I don’t even like bourbon and this was really cool.
- Take Dad on a tour of one of the horse farms in Lexington. These are absolutely beautiful, and even if you have no connection to horses whatsoever, the electricity that’s at these farms in the aftermath of American Pharoah winning the Triple Crown is really something. Ashford, Claiborne, Calumet, Gainesway, Gainesborough, etc.
- While you’re at a horse farm, take Dad to Wallace Station Deli in Midway for lunch. It’s amazing and has been featured on the Food Network.
- Cincinnati Reds are at home vs. the Marlins on Sunday, game time 1:10 pm. There is a restaurant and bar called the Beer Cellar on the Kentucky side of the river, you can park there and have lunch/beers and take a ferry across the river for $3 I think to the ballpark, watch the game, and take the ferry back. No having to pay to park plus you avoid traffic.
- Wash, wax and detail Dad’s car for him
- Kart Kountry
- Shooting Range
- Corvette museum in Bowling Green
- Fishing at Kentucky, Cumberland, Nolin or Rough River lake
- Get Dad and a bunch of his buddies together (this works best if you are also friends with their kids) and do something for them- whatever it is they like. A backyard cookout for them, day of fishing, golf, etc.

The “Father’s Day Redo” video follows in the footsteps of the popular Super Bowl commercials Toyota released featuring famous fathers of the NFL, including DeMarcus Ware, Fred Jackson and Kurt Warner.
