It Happened at the World’s Fair (1963) [Warner Archive Blu-ray review]

It Happened at the World’s Fair is proof that Elvis never made a logic driven movie. In this outing, Elvis and Dr. Frank Poole borrow a crop dusting plane to get to the World’s Fair. When things go wrong, Elvis has to babysit an Asian girl while trying to attend the Fair. Got all that? Good! There’s a reason why the film is only remembered for Kurt Russell’s first onscreen role.

Elvis movies are typically considered junk. While they started rather strong with King Creole among others, the later movies deserve to be forgotten. The entire push behind It Happened at the World’s Fair is that Elvis and his friend want to get laid. Unfortunately, the buddy has to compete with Elvis at the peak of his tail chasing game. Even saddling him with a kid in the movie doesn’t do anything to slow him down. He ends up with two ladies and manages to get away with it all.

The supporting cast is super strong featuring turns from Yvonne Craig among others. But, it’s a 105 minute movie that could have been resolved in 22 minutes. Crazy things happen all the time, but somehow It Happened at the World’s Fair was a major hit. Film history is full of curiosities, but I’d love to further expand on the Elvis film history and dig into it deeper.

Warner Archive brings a trailer to the Blu-ray. While I would have liked to have seen some special features, it is what it is. The A/V Quality is pretty strong with a clean cut 1080p transfer. However, I wish the DTS-HD MONO track picked up more. Still, it’s worth a visit to Elvis fans.
