INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN, THE: COLLECTOR’S EDITION

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN REVIEWED

The Incredible Shrinking Woman” always looked like it was shot under a coat of Vaseline. While I grew up watching the movie on HBO, I didn’t pick up on so much going down in the movie. I just thought Galaxy Glue was a catchy song and Charles Grodin was a hard-working father. Little did I know that the film was taking a cue from the Romero school of social commentary. Also, John Landis was supposed to direct this movie before Universal canned him. While this movie birthed the legend of Joel Schumacher, it’s fun to think of what could have been.

While most of the commentary is dated, the heart of the matter remains. A constant glut of chemicals will invade your home and eventually kill you. I wish that we didn’t have the happy ending tacked on, as it undercuts so much of what the film is trying to do. Lily Tomlin makes the most of the material, but the rest of the cast doesn’t seem to be on the same page. Stunning work at every turn in a rather muddy directed film. Check it out.
