Hulu unleashes new thrillers, animated scares, and beloved franchises as Huluween expands to Disney+ bundle subscribers for the first time.

The Basics

  • Event: Huluween 2024
  • Platform: Hulu (and Disney+ for bundle subscribers)
  • Content Type: Horror Originals, specials, thrillers, cult classics, milestone anniversary titles
  • New Originals: A Little Fright Music (Family Guy), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The Man in My Basement, Stay, Obituary Season 2
  • New Series: Alien: Earth (FX)
  • Recent Additions: The Monkey, Longlegs, Hell of a Summer
  • Returning Franchises: Twilight complete saga, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, original The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
  • Anniversary Titles: 50 years of Rocky Horror Picture Show, 10 years of Scream Queens, 35 years of Edward Scissorhands

What’s Happening

Hulu announced its 2024 Huluween programming slate, delivering a comprehensive horror lineup spanning new Originals, exclusive thrillers, and catalog classics throughout October. This year marks the first time Huluween content is available to Disney+ bundle subscribers, expanding the potential audience significantly.

The programming strategy balances multiple audience segments: family-friendly horror through the Family Guy Halloween special, prestige thriller filmmaking via 20th Century Studios and Andscape films, established franchises with the complete Twilight saga, and cult classic celebrations marking major anniversaries.

New Original Programming

A Little Fright Music (Family Guy Halloween Special, premieres October 6) positions Halloween content for younger audiences, with Brian and Stewie setting out to write quality Halloween songs while Peter and the gang face deadly consequences for lying about trick-or-treating.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (20th Century Studios, October 22) offers a modern psychological thriller reimagining of the 1992 classic, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe leading a story about suburban deception and hidden identities.

The Man in My Basement (Andscape, September 26) and Stay (Andscape, October 8) represent prestige horror from underrepresented creators. The former follows an African American homeowner facing foreclosure who rents his basement to a mysterious businessman, while the latter chronicles a failing marriage confronting supernatural forces. Both films premiered at major festivals (TIFF selection for Basement, distinct pedigree for Stay).

Obituary Season 2 (premieres October 14) continues the UK dark comedy series with new cast additions and narrative complications. Siobhán Cullen’s Elvira now investigates murders she didn’t commit while Detective Rose (Noni Stapleton) suspects her involvement.

Premium Series: FX’s ‘Alien: Earth’

Alien: Earth (now streaming) represents major franchise expansion within the Hulu ecosystem. Set in 2120, the series explores a corporate-governed Earth where humans, cyborgs, and synthetics coexist. The narrative centers on Wendy (Sydney Chandler), humanity’s first hybrid prototype—a being with human consciousness in an android body—who encounters extraterrestrial threats after a Weyland-Yutani spacecraft crashes into Prodigy City.

The series operates as both prequel and expansion to the established Alien universe, offering complex worldbuilding around consciousness, artificial intelligence, and corporate power structures beyond traditional monster-hunting narratives.

Franchise Strategy: Complete Sagas and Anniversary Positioning

Hulu’s catalog emphasis highlights strategic franchise bundling. The complete Twilight saga (five films, October 1) repositions the vampire romance phenomenon for contemporary audiences rediscovering the franchise through nostalgia and generational sharing.

Anniversary programming celebrates cultural touchstones: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (50th anniversary), Scream Queens (10th anniversary), and Edward Scissorhands (35th anniversary) function as both nostalgia plays and gateway content for viewers unfamiliar with these titles.

Recent Breakout Hits Integration

The Monkey (now streaming), Longlegs (now streaming), and Hell of a Summer (now streaming) leverage recent commercial and critical success. The Monkey, adapted from Stephen King and produced by James Wan, capitalizes on Longlegs momentum—both films from writer-director Osgood Perkins represent Hulu’s horror credibility among genre enthusiasts.

Market Positioning and Disney+ Integration

Expanding Huluween to Disney+ bundle subscribers represents strategic audience growth. Disney+ subscribers gain access to horror content previously siloed on Hulu, potentially increasing engagement among users who don’t maintain separate Hulu subscriptions.

The integration also positions horror as a year-round Disney+ category rather than seasonal content, normalizing genre diversity within the broader Disney+ brand.

What Comes Next

Huluween content launches throughout October, with premiere dates ranging from September 26 through October 22. All content streams on Hulu, with Disney+ bundle subscribers accessing Huluween programming simultaneously.

For fans of: Horror films, psychological thrillers, cult classics, prestige genre cinema, Twilight, Buffy, Scream Queens, Stephen King adaptations, supernatural horror
