“Hit by Lightning” is like if someone tried to do Film Noir for basic cable or network TV. Will Sasso and Jon Cryer are workable leads that try to get earnest laughs. It’s just that why should I care? Some might claim it is an age thing that keeps me from relating to the leads, but if that’s the case why didn’t it catch on with the rest of the country? Ricky Blitt is a solid comedy writer and I appreciate his efforts on “The Ringer” and “Family Guy”.

Jon Cryer was interesting as a teenage actor. So, what happened? I don’t know if Primetime TV ruined him or just age. Nothing he does is funny and any sense of that Hughes era timing is long since gone. The dude isn’t “Superman IV” bad, but I don’t think anyone could ever stay at that point of decline. Still, I can’t take my eyes off of this movie.

The DVD comes with no special features. I would’ve loved to have heard a commentary, but I guess not. The transfer is pretty strong. Plus, the Dolby 5.1 track creates a really amazing sound stage. In the end, I’d recommend a rental or stream to the curious.
