Hannah Marcus Finally Releases the Long-Shelved Ten Bones from a Virgin Graveyard
After nearly two decades in stasis, Hannah Marcus will release her long-delayed album Ten Bones from a Virgin Graveyard through Bar/None Records. Recorded in fits and starts between 2004–2010 at Hotel2Tango in Montreal and finally mixed through 2017, the record arrives digitally this summer with a roster of names that’ll make post-rock obsessives and lit-folk fans perk up.
Marcus produced the record with Thierry Amar and Efrim Menuck (yes, from that Godspeed You! Black Emperor). Matana Roberts plays on it. Kevin Shea drums. There’s even a flying squirrel on the press sheet. It’s the kind of overcooked detail you’d expect, but it’s true.
The Album
- Ten Bones from a Virgin Graveyard is not a lost pop album. It’s a collection of ghostly, poetic, genre-agnostic tone pieces that sound like they fell off the soundtrack of a David Milch funeral dirge or the third act of a forgotten Hal Hartley movie.
- Tracklist includes cuts like “Ten Bones and a Screwdriver,” “A Virgin Graveyard,” and “Ray’s Last Time at the Old Hotel.”

About Hannah Marcus
- NYC-born, raised in Spanish Harlem by a painter and a composer.
- Older sibling to an autistic sister—something she says helped shape her artistic lens.
- Active in the San Francisco Sadcore scene of the early ‘90s after seeing American Music Club in a parking lot.
- Longtime collaborator with Mark Kozelek, Matana Roberts, Rick Moody, Nina Katchadourian, and the Wingdale Community Singers.
- Also active in olfactory art, because of course she is.
