HAMLET (2018) 1

HAMLET REVIEWED

“Hamlet” gets the modern treatment, as British star Maxine Pearce flips the script. The last time we had a woman playing Hamlet was Frances de la Tour in the mid 70s. Now, Pearce mixes the best of modern gender bending to get to the roots of this classic tale. This is a revenge story and our lady Prince man is mad. Over 3 hours, Pearce takes us all into familiar territory. However, she gets to hit upon righteous anger in a way that you don’t get from male actors.

The hang-up I have is that Hamlet is pretty easy to adapt. Attempt the same thing with Richard III or even Titus Andronicus and get back to me with results. Still, it’s well worth watching just for the experimental factor.
