“Grantchester” is a film about a man of faith trying to redeem himself after World War II. Sidney Chambers knows that the violence he committed was for a greater good, but he moves to Grantchester to find peace in his vocation. Chambers isn’t sure how to get involved with a local murder investigation, but he knows someone is picking off members of his congregation. Thus, we enter into the rural Columbo phase of the story.
Nothing says a murder mystery like a Vicar being on the case. It seems like there was a big period where religious figures were forced to dirty their hands. I love that while Chambers is a veteran of the Scottish Guard, he feels repulsed to indulge in violence and he still doesn’t want to forgive the murderer. Class issues and base prejudice arrive, but Chamber feels like a man out of place. Thankfully, the series is getting another season.
The Blu-Ray comes with interviews, featurettes and a ton of informational special features. The A/V Quality is astounding for a PBS Brit TV pick-up. The 1080p transfer is astounding with its lush landscapes. However, I found the stereo track to be lossy. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
