GOOD KILL

“Good Kill” is a film that should’ve been more than it was. I’m a big fan of Andrew Niccol, but his work is so scattershot. There are amazing ideas and arguments to be had over this film. However, how many times do we need to see a soldier being conflicted? War is Hell, but when does it become a bit much to keep seeing people struggle with roles that should’ve accepted by now. You work with armaments and train for defense, sometimes somebody gets killed.

Ethan Hawke still provides for an excellent counterpoint to the jingoistic bullshit of work such as “American Sniper”. However, what happens when the pendulum swings back the other way? While keeping Peter Coyote down to a faceless distant voice was a neat touch, the stuff with Bruce Greenwood confused me. Did a Mother Jones message board suddenly become enlisted and start spouting off tired talking points? Also, who let January Jones in this? That’s not so much a comment on the movie, but on my sheer amazement at how she keeps getting work.

The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette as the sole special feature. The A/V Quality is pretty stunning for a recent release. The 1080p transfer is pristine. However, I found that the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track never quite knew which channel to hit. The dialogue is clear, but the limited action seemed all over the place. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.

Release Date: 9/1/15
