GIRLS SEASON 5 REVIEWED
“Girls” is a niche audience that will be ending with the next season. I kept telling myself that as I powered through this season. I started off trying to give it a chance. Hell, I watched “Tiny Furniture” again and again to compare it to where Dunham is now. Much like Woody Allen, Dunham is a faux agent of the Zeitgeist perpetrated on America by the East Coast Elite. Well, “Elite” in the sense that they’re New York Times crossword artists who think that a pen makes them immune to mistakes. As this season opens, that kind of mindset spills through Marnie’s wedding.
The four lead girls aren’t friends anymore, but they have a shared history. Younger readers, this will happen to you. The rest of the season is spent paying more attention to the side characters, but I kept finding myself fascinated by Shosh’s trip to Japan. It seems that the further away Shosh gets from the others, the healthier she becomes. She’s still prone to mistakes, but she seems earnestly happy. Marnie is still toxic and British Girl seems hellbent on Adam. Then, there’s Lena Dunham.
Yeah, I know I should call her Hannah. But, I don’t even see a character anymore. In fact, the last year or so of the series feels like a giant posterboard sign with neon puffy paint reading THIS IS ALL ABOUT ME! while having to be tranq’d by the cops. Vanity projects aren’t fun, but I guess that’s why the audience for this keeps shrinking. What was once novel has been revealed to be nothing but a look at toxic friendships. Kylo Ren does show up this season.
