GIRL WITHOUT HANDS, THE

THE GIRL WITHOUT HANDS REVIEWED

“The Girl Without Hands” is proof that the Brothers Grimm didn’t strike gold every time at bat. This story is about a young girl who the Devil wins from her father. Old Satan wants the lady to be dirty, but she keeps getting clean. So, he manipulates her father into cutting her hands off. Afterwards, she suffers and eventually meets a Prince. They marry and have a baby, now Satan wants to claim his prize. Somehow, this is all a metaphor for the Religious Cultural Takeover of mainland Europe.

GKids is doing amazing work grabbing these foreign animated tales. While it seems more impressionistic than recent French animation, I enjoy this departure from the standard model. The open flowing nature of the painted landscapes really pops for me. This is coming off a 2017 that saw everything from Cuphead to Loving Vincent exploring free-flowing line work in popular fiction. It’s quite stunning and deserves more attention than the latest Minion outing.

While this won’t wow the kids, it’s almost required viewing for the art student in your life. Check it out.
