THE PLOT THUS FAR

A female cyborg cop and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Ghost in the Shell” focuses on Project 2501 coming to life and learning what its role has been in man’s world. There is nudity and graphic violence, but this is a film about the rights of self autonomy. The politics of identity and where people find themselves in society is also called into question. At times, the Puppet Master seems disgusted by the notion that it could be policed by normal humans. When our hero cop tries to stop the hacker, she finds out that there are things about herself that she has yet to answer.

Anime always seems to come with a catch, except for Miyazaki. My problem with this film is that the subtitles have almost always been off. Sadly, that continues on this disc. For new viewers, something as small as pronoun confusion can make a dense film like this turn into a hedge maze. While I support foreign cinema including foreign animation being brought to the greater masses, this is a matter that should be constantly scrutinized. That being said, the film looks great. Production I.G.’s artwork is stunning and the smooth dark lines that I first saw back in 1995 have never looked this smooth before. Hell, this release is almost enough to make me seek out the sequel I didn’t like. Notice how I said almost. Man, I hated that sequel.

The Blu-Ray comes with no special features. However, the A/V Quality is astounding. I’ve seen this movie on everything from VHS to Laserdisc to DVD. Hell, I saw a Revival Theater print that looked like someone ran it through a gravel parking lot. This 1080p transfer and DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is the only way to watch it. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
