“Get Hard” is a failure. There are way too many talents involved to produce something so lukewarm and dead on arrival. Where to begin? The throw away “The Other Guys” riff on white collar criminals? The push to show that Kevin Hart is actually middle class, but willing to go along with a stupid scam? How about a whole scene based on Will Ferrell learning to offset prison rape by learning how to suck a dick?
Regardless of what you might think of “Anchorman 2”, nobody was staging homophobic attempts to blow dudes as part of a long joke. The joke is having male nudity and an uncomfortable situation, but the movie cuts away from it at record speed. For an attempt to create a socially conscious R-rated comedy, the end result is a wet fart. The kind of wet fart that Richard Pryor used to do after the freebasing fire. What I’m saying is that this is Will Ferrell’s “Superman III”.
Kevin Hart deserved better. He did everything the role required of him and he held his own with Will Ferrell. It’s just that we’ve seen this role before and performance. He plays off racist stereotypes, he frequently saves Ferrell and he ultimately learns a lesson. Everyone smiles, an easy joke or two and we get to the end credits. Still, it’s not the worst movie I’ve seen this month.
