“Gangs of Wasseypur” is a stunning Indian crime flick that covers 70 years in the Wasseypur Mafia. Shahid Khan leads the Mafia in the 1940s, as he guides his son and his friends into taking over the family business. Things go bad and the least likely son of Khan has to rise to the top. The rest of the film is a brutal battle between families for power.

More than anything, the film has a strong “Mean Streets” vibe. The music is plenty powerful, as we get a sense more of the culture than just brutal violence. While I’m not a huge fan of modern Indian cinema, I found myself watching this one three times just to pick up on detail. I love it when crime films want to make you enjoy their world. Too often it’s just about machismo.

The Blu-Ray comes with an audio commentary and a nice booklet as the special features. The A/V Quality is stunning for a foreign flick. The 1080p transfer pops and shows off deep color scale. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track really pops for all of its action. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
