In the third season of the hit HBO drama series Game of Thrones, the Lannisters are barely holding onto power after a savage naval onslaught from Stannis Baratheon, while stirrings in the North threaten to alter the overall balance of power in Westeros. Robb Stark, King in the North, is facing major calamity in his efforts to build on his victories over the Lannisters while beyond the Wall, Mance Rayder and his huge army of wildlings continue their inexorable march south. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen – reunited with her three fast-maturing dragons – attempts to raise an army to sail with her from Essos, in hopes of eventually claiming the Iron Throne.

“Game of Thrones” enters its third season with everything at stake. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys and the dragons await to take the Iron Throne. Tyrion and the Lannisters are humbled, but they know that they have one chance to make a direct play for utter control. The Starks keep traveling against adversity to find a way to redeem their family. If that wasn’t enough, everyone is still boning and getting naked at a drop of the hat. That’s what George R.R. Martin is eighty times better than J.R.R. Tolkein. “The Lord of the Rings” didn’t have anywhere near the incest, boning, magic boners and other things that make fantasy murder and sodomy stand out so brightly.
The third season of the show really raised the bar. Everyone knows about the “Red Wedding” and it’s been parodied in everything including “South Park”. What I want to talk about is the amazing things like the addition of Diana Rigg or almost turning into literal adaptations of the Martin books. The level of carnage, sexual situations and political intrigue is so strong that my heart nearly bursts. But, I have been raised on a diet of mass carnage and a love of scandalous tit play.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, interactive guide, DVD and Digital Copy. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is sharp as hell with reference quality definition. The 1080p transfer shows deep blues and dark field of depth. It suits the show, plus it pops more than any other recent HBO Blu-Ray. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
