In a sunken castle underneath the earth, five strangers wake. They have no food. No memory. No water. And no way out. They don’t know it yet, but they’re capable of something they never imagined. They must organize and band together for the sinister adventure that awaits them.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Game of Assassins” is very much in the SAW tradition. However, this film relies more on plot construction and the need for a solid ending to pull it all together. While we did get some satisfying enough, I do feel like it’s not going to impress a wide audience. We do get some sick visuals and a fair share of gore. However, I kept finding myself wondering if many of these setups were necessary at the time. At what point does one wonder if enough is enough?
I love Bai Ling in this movie. While most of the cast isn’t that engaging, she brings her natural talents to the screen and commands your attention. The film has one too many a-ha moments and they never feel as clever as they’re intended. During some of the brutal sequences in SAW, I found myself impressed by the setups. This just feels like lazy video game leveling to torture random actors, as they progress. I don’t hate it, however it quickly became background material as I started to research what some of the setups might be referencing. When my full attention returned, I was left wondering if it’s the viewer’s fault for breaking away or the content?
The DVD comes with a digital copy, deleted scenes and trailer gallery as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong for an indie thriller. The transfer is sharp. Plus, the Dolby track helps with the scares. In the end, I’d recommend a rental or a stream.
