Eureka Entertainment is blowing a hole through your home video shelf with the first-ever Blu-ray release of the 1987 Hong Kong action cult classic Flaming Brothers — arriving September 16, 2025 in both the UK and North America.

Restored in 2K, packed with new extras, and proudly slotted into the Eureka Classics range, this Limited Edition release is capped at 2,000 copies per territory. Translation: don’t sleep on it.
Pre-order now before it’s gone

What Is Flaming Brothers?

A lesser-known but essential entry in the “heroic bloodshed” era of Hong Kong cinema, Flaming Brothers stars:

  • Chow Yun-fat, just as he was becoming a household name
  • Alan Tang, bringing charisma and firepower in equal measure
  • And Wong Kar-wai, secretly sneaking emotion and longing into the script before he’d go full art-house

The plot’s pure 1980s triad tragedy:

  • Two orphans grow up together on the streets
  • Become blood brothers in crime
  • Open a nightclub (because it’s 1987, obviously)
  • And eventually butt heads with a rival gangster played by Patrick Tse, backed by Norman Chui and a whole lot of bullets

It’s violent, melodramatic, and drenched in the kind of stylish doom that would later define Wong Kar-wai’s whole aesthetic—except here, it’s filtered through bullet casings and cigarette smoke.

Why This Release Matters

This isn’t a quick-and-dirty transfer. Eureka’s bringing out the good stuff:

  • New 2K restoration from original film elements
  • First time on Blu-ray in both the UK and North America
  • Limited Edition O-card slipcase with exclusive new art by Time Tomorrow
  • Collector’s booklet with a new essay by Hong Kong cinema scholar Camille Zaurin

That’s not “slap a trailer on it and call it a day” energy. That’s actual collector-grade effort.

All extras subject to change, but let’s be real—Eureka rarely half-asses this stuff.

Why You Should Care (Even If You’ve Never Seen It)

  • It’s the missing link between A Better Tomorrow and Wong Kar-wai’s early auteur phase
  • Chow Yun-fat gets to shoot, suffer, and smolder like no one else
  • The script is peak Hong Kong bromance with just enough doomed cool guy pathos to make you cry into your VHS copy of City on Fire

This isn’t just a “forgotten gem”—it’s a key piece of genre DNA finally getting the proper restoration treatment it deserves.

Let’s be honest: if your action shelf doesn’t have Chow Yun-fat AND a Wong Kar-wai deep cut by the end of 2025, you’re just stalling.
