There are true stories that fiction has no business touching, and then there are the ones it cannot leave alone. The rise and ruin of Heaven’s Gate belongs in the second camp, and now I have my first genuine look at how The Leader intends to tell it. A new batch of official images from the film has just gone out, and they confirm exactly what made this project a magnet for attention the moment the cast was announced: Vera Farmiga and Tim Blake Nelson disappearing into two of the most unsettling figures in modern American history.
The Leader held its world premiere on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the SVA Theater in New York City as part of the 2026 Tribeca Festival, where it screened as a Spotlight Narrative. Written and directed by Michael Gallagher, The Leader dramatizes the founding, devotion, and devastation of the group the world came to know as Heaven’s Gate. If the early notices out of Tribeca are any indication, The Leader is one of the festival’s higher-profile titles this year, and the two performances at its center are the reason.
Meet Ti, Do, and the Faithful
The new gallery puts faces to the names, and the transformation is the whole point. Here is the first official look, with photography by cinematographer Ben Mullen.
- Vera Farmiga as Bonnie Lu Nettles, known to followers as “Ti.” The Academy Award nominee plays the quieter half of the duo, the spiritual architect whose certainty gave Heaven’s Gate its gravitational pull.
- Tim Blake Nelson as Marshall Herff Applewhite, known as “Do.” Nelson takes the more visible role of the messiah figure whose voice carried the doctrine, and the early word out of Tribeca suggests it is among his finest work.
- Simon Rex as David, renamed “Davody,” and Jim Parsons as Warren, renamed “Warody.” The Golden Globe winner Parsons plays a true believer wrestling with his own demons, while Rex rounds out the inner circle. The “-ody” suffixes are not a stylistic flourish, by the way. They mirror the real cult’s practice of assigning members new names, a small detail The Leader gets pointedly right.
The Story Behind the Story
For anyone who needs the refresher, Heaven’s Gate shocked the world in March 1997, when thirty-nine members took their own lives in a rented mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California, in what remains the largest mass suicide on American soil. The group believed a spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet would carry them to the “Next Level,” and they died in matching outfits and Nike sneakers, faces covered in purple shrouds. The imagery alone seared itself into the culture, and The Leader clearly understands that the horror lives in how ordinary it all started.
What The Leader sets out to do, and what early Tribeca reactions credit it with pulling off, is resist the easy true-crime sensationalism. The film traces “Ti and Do” from their fateful first meeting in Houston, Texas, in the early 1970s through that tragic end in 1997, and Gallagher reportedly keeps the focus on the human machinery of belief rather than the spectacle of its collapse. Coming from the writer-director of The Thinning, that restraint is the surprise, and it is the thing I am most curious to see for myself.
