THE PLOT THUS FAR
After her divorce, Alyson Simon and her daughter Claire move into an old house outside the city. Claire finds an old doll left in the house by the previous occupants, and soon, Alyson begins to see sinister changes in her. After discovering the doll’s dark secret, she and her estranged husband must race against time to stop the entity trying to take over their daughter.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Finders Keepers” is this great little horror film about a kid and a possessed doll. When did dolls become all the rage for light horror? Tobin Bell and Jaime Pressly show up as our leads. I have to admit that I dig how Pressly has been redefining herself in smaller roles in a post “My Name is Earl” world. That being said, Tobin Bell and Marina Sirtis show up in between convention stops for fame starved nerds. I’m not familiar with the little girl, but she was able to work well even with the bizarre sound design.
The film is very cliche, but it finds its comfort zone within that which we expect. Older fans will expect “The Bad Seed”, while younger fans will expect something on par with “The Conjuring”. You don’t get either, but I admire the ability to slip in and out of convention as the narrative demands. While not an amazing film, it’s an interesting indie feature that will stick in the back of my mind for awhile. What? Did you think I was hard on all non-major horror? I can still surprise you.
The DVD comes with a featurette as the special feature. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for standard definition. That being said, the transfer still doesn’t get much to do. The Dolby 5.1 track keeps all channels pumping. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
