THE PLOT THUS FAR
Felipe Esparza is best known for his raw, real-life comedy that audiences everywhere can relate to. In They’re Not Going Laugh At You, this wild-haired funnyman takes you on an unforgettable comedic journey through topics like Latino stereotypes, (‘We are not all hard workers’) and illegal immigrants in Minnesota (‘If you made it that far you can stay’) that will have you in stitches from the moment he hits the stage.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Last Comic Standing” winner Felipe Esparza runs riot in his first one-hour comedy special with his wry observations on life as a wild man from East Los Angeles. Aging, the immigrant experience and weight are all targets for Felipe’s sharp tongue. Esparza’s facial expressions and delivery and how he interweves each story and joke with his own personal touch was amazing. Still, it’s a rather limp stand-up routine that feels like it was packaged rather fast for a premium cable dropping point.
Esparza apparently has quite a stand-up reputation, but I haven’t heard of the guy until I saw this set. While a cable outing is rarely indicative of a good performance, it allowed us to get an idea of what the man had to offer. The usual reliance on illegal immigration jokes has become stale, but Esparza tries to make them his own. However, it still might not be enough to wow a wider audience.
The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is rather average for a Dolby 2.0 Surround track with a rather flat transfer. It’s on par with digital broadcast, but it lacks the punch-up that comes with HD. Still, I’d like to have seen something more than just a single performance. Oh well, it’s a rental for the fans.
