EXPENDABLES 2, THE (4K UHD)

THE EXPENDABLES 2 REVIEWED

“The Expendables 2” is the film that made the series work. The first film was seemingly scared of embracing its 80s action movie roots. Somewhere between Jean Claude Van Damme as the villain and the team shake-up, this movie embraces action corn. While embracing that old school Cannon/Carolco style of action isn’t for everyone, it speaks to certain needs in the film-going populace. They need heroes and they need them to be macho. But, the modern era needs something to humanize them. The compromise is old dudes.

The 4K presentation continues Lionsgate’s record of taking to the new format like a duck to water. While the company has always been dominating audio since the early days of DVD, their presentation quality only continues to climb. The 4K side contains the featurettes that are practically documentaries, while the rest of the special features get dumped to 1080 land. Given that this release means I’m upgrading from DVD, you can bet that I’m fully onboard.

That being said, I still recommend the release to non-fans. If you’re going to make the jump to 4K, you need material to showcase your new setup. This is that theatrical showcase fodder.
