“Everly” is a film that borrows from many greater works. Salma Hayek plays the sex slave titular character who now has a taste for revenge. The set pieces and levels of blood entertained me. The whole Yakuza angle felt played out and really lacked major stakes. It’s a girl power endeavor to force herself back into a maternal role. Service through gruesome murder?
Director Joe Lynch is an incredible genre talent. The guy has an ability to set up shots and direct flow that matches Carpenter in the late 70s. However, he has yet to find that movie that fully matches his abilities. While “Everly” isn’t the movie to do it, Lynch is getting closer to that breakthrough movie. I can’t wait to see it.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentaries and a music video as the special features. The A/V Quality is stunning for an indie action flick. The 1080p transfer pops, while playing heavily in darker hues. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track also gets to play around with the sound stage. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
