EQUESTRIA GIRLS: LEGEND OF EVERFREE REVIEWED
“Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree” must work well for little girls. But, I just came from a conversation with an adult Brony fan explaining their love for the Equestria Girls. Let’s be honest, most of the fan subsections scare the living bile out of me. As I read this man’s small essay about why it matters that they are little girls and not ponies now, I feel a little bit of me die. Why? Well, it’s because I live in a world where I have to explain these people to my daughter.
Fandom is wide and diverse, but there comes a time when age cut-offs become important. Stories about magical pony girls learning their powers and saving their summer camp should come with a cut-off. These cut-offs naturally happen, but the modern era seems to keep making excuses for older people to keep sticking a toe back into these childhood favorites. I hate bringing up maturity, but that should be a factor in keeping adult fans out of the kiddie pool.
For kids, this is a great 74 minute romp that captures the best elements of the old show and the current generation. But, I can’t even acknowledge this summer camp movie without always keeping that guy’s essay in the back of my mind. I feel bad for My Little Pony, as no matter what they do…these fans will find a way to latch on. Let the little girls have their own thing.
