WHAT IS DOWNTOWN 81?
Directed by Edo Bertoglio, the film follows the journey of a struggling artist, played by the now iconic Jean-Michel Basquiat, that gives an almost eerily accurate parallel to his real – life struggles to worldwide fame. It’s New York City in 1981, a world that most of its current occupiers cannot begin to comprehend. The drugs, the crime, the emergence of the AIDS epidemic contrasted with the burgeoning changes of a new voice growing in the art, music and political worlds managed to bring momentum and inspiration – for many – what led to international fame. The characters he encounters in this almost fantasy-like underground culture include appearances by Debbie Harry aka’Blondie’, Fab Five Freddy, Lee Quinones and more. It’s no surprise the film’s writer and co-producer is Glenn O’Brien, a heavyweight himself in the world of writing and art being part also Andy Warhol’s Factory and editor of Interview Magazine.
