Here’s a fresh perspective on fiction’s most iconic detective: BritBox has announced that Edward Bluemel (We Might Regret This, My Lady Jane) will star as Agatha Christie’s Belgian sleuth in new drama series Hercule, following Poirot’s first cases in London before he becomes the world’s most famous detective. The six-part series, produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for BritBox North America and the BBC, is written by Benji Walters (Code of Silence, The Leopard, Obsession) with BAFTA winner Jonny Campbell (Am I Being Unreasonable?, Dracula, In The Flesh) directing the first two episodes. Filming begins this summer, primarily in Liverpool, with the series streaming on BritBox in the US and Canada.
The Premise
Hercule explores the detective before he became legend.
The series is both an intimate study of Hercule the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars. It takes a magnifying glass to three of Christie’s most celebrated stories while charting Hercule’s burgeoning friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, his early encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp, and introducing him to one particular nemesis.
The origin story approach allows exploration of how Poirot developed his methods and relationships, the foundations that would support his later legendary status. The interwar Britain setting provides historical context that shaped both the detective and the crimes he would solve.

His credits include We Might Regret This and My Lady Jane, demonstrating the charm and dynamism that the role requires. The casting positions Bluemel within lineage that includes David Suchet’s definitive 25-year portrayal and Kenneth Branagh’s recent film interpretations.
