“Dreamscape” follows Dennis Quaid as a psychic con man who gets recruited into something over his head. He’s got to stop shadowy government figures from using Luther from The Warriors to kill the President in his sleep. Claymation figures, Serpent Men and Eddie Albert all come into play. It took 20 years of trying to watch this movie, before it sunk in. Hell, the best way to describe it as a high-concept Troma take on “Inception”.
But, it’s not Troma…it’s Universal. I still don’t get why they didn’t bother to try and make the movie far more coherent. It’s not like the film has a history of brutal cuts. When you listen to the commentary, it’s obvious that this is the movie that Russell and Ruben wanted to shoot. I did forget that the movie ends in Louisville on a train line that doesn’t exist anymore. If you’re curious, I’d recommend exploring the special features directly after finishing the film. The supplements answer so many questions for first-time viewers.
