Don’t Play with Fire gets lovely Cult Epics release on June 23rd
Here’s one of Hong Kong cinema’s most controversial films finally receiving proper US release: Cult Epics presents Tsui Hark’s violent action crime film Don’t Play with Fire (aka Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind) in a Limited Edition 2-Disc Blu-ray set (3,000 copies) and DVD (1,000 copies), releasing June 23, 2026. One of the most controversial and violent crime films of the Hong Kong New Wave in the 1980s, this US premiere features a new 2K transfer and restoration with three versions of the film—the uncensored international theatrical version, the banned Chinese version, and the English dubbed version—alongside extensive bonus features including an interview with director Tsui Hark. The Film
Don’t Play with Fire delivers nihilistic crime thriller from a director who would reshape Hong Kong cinema.
After a hit-and-run, three high-school friends flee the crime scene. Pearl, a “sadistic” young girl who witnessed the accident, follows them and blackmails them into more crimes, with disastrous consequences.
The premise escalates from accidental crime into deliberate transgression, Pearl’s manipulation pushing the students deeper into violence that shocked Hong Kong censors upon release. The film’s nihilism and graphic content made it one of the era’s most controversial productions.
The Director
Tsui Hark directed Don’t Play with Fire before becoming one of Hong Kong cinema’s most influential filmmakers.
His subsequent credits include A Better Tomorrow, Once Upon a Time in China, and the A Chinese Ghost Story series, films that defined 1980s and 1990s Hong Kong action and fantasy cinema. But this 1980 production shows Hark in provocative mode, pushing boundaries that his later commercial work would approach differently.
The Hong Kong New Wave context positions Don’t Play with Fire alongside other filmmakers challenging what the territory’s cinema could address and how. Disc 2 contains the banned Chinese version (2K/SD) that authorities suppressed, running approximately 100 minutes, alongside the English dubbed version (SD) at approximately 91 minutes.
The multiple versions allow viewers to understand what censors found objectionable and how the film changed across different markets. The preservation of the banned Chinese version represents significant archival work.
