HOW I WATCHED IT

Docurama, a direct-to-consumer digital channel featuring over 1,000 award winning and critically acclaimed documentaries from the Cinedigm library, recently launched in May.

 

Just in time for summer vacation, Docurama is currently featuring a package of themed documentaries – including two exclusives to the channel – A Deeper Shade of Blue, a film about surfing’s deepest roots, and Beyond 360, a film about two friends who quit their job to sail around the world!

WHAT I THOUGHT

The 2005 USGP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca sets the stage for “The Doctor, The Tornado and the Kentucky Kid”. The presentation is uneven, as all of the interview segments are typical. However, it’s the actual race that will get pulses going. The setup to the race almost feels like a cruel joke played on the audience. But, the racing action was well worth the wait.

Ewan McGregor provides masterful narration throughout the documentary. However, it feels that Obi-Wan has to spend most of his time doing all of the heavy lifting. Most of the people interviewed aren’t big talkers, so it feels like Conan O’ Brien interviewing Harrison Ford at times. That being said, I felt that the issue of risk to the racers wasn’t tackled enough.

Motocross isn’t my forte, but apparently a lot of fans online share the same complaints that the track was shit during the 2005 race. Hayden played it technical throughout the documentary, but we never got a sense of what the others racers thought. Unfortunately, they never got their own documentary. So, we’ll take the version of history that we saw here. That’s just the way it goes.
