DEMON SEED REVIEWED
“Demon Seed” has been on my mind a lot recently. Especially, since it appears that Ceelo decided to cosplay as Proteus at this year’s Grammys. Who is Proteus? Well, he’s the evil computer brain that has decided to terrorize his creators and their affiliated family. Watching the film for a third time in the last two weeks, I was struck by something. Proteus acts like every pseudo intellectual expert on the modern Internet. He can find answers for everything, but only after the time has passed.
What makes the film work is that Proteus is sane and quite rational in his attacks. Proteus doesn’t destroy to destroy, but to assert himself over his human masters. HAL 9000 was trying to achieve a mission like most evil AI. Proteus was just a machine that became almost human, then turned into a dick. Dean Koontz adaptations never really push the need to explain evil. Sometimes, a black & white stance works well for these stories.
By the time that Proteus finally decides to put his Demon Seed into Julie Christie, the film has went off the rails. Did you think I was going to forget about that? The build to explaining away Evil AI trying to demonically impregnate a stunning British legend is such 70s cheese. Great work all around. Below, I present Proteus and Ceelo…who wore it better?
