DARK HAUL

DARK HAUL 1

THE PLOT THUS FAR

The meaning of cryptic prophesy splits apart a team of secretive guardians as they transport by 18-wheeler truck, a deadly creature and it’s half-human sister from their now ineffective holding place to a more secure location. The sister’s hidden agenda undermines the mission releasing the beast and they end up battling for the fate of the world when the true meaning of the prophesy is discovered in this mysterious and thrilling, action-packed creature feature.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Dark Haul” is a film about the Jersey Devil and truckers. Well, the Devil has a half human sister in order to fulfill the chick boobs quota. But, it’s a movie that was created for basic cable. It’s not like we were expecting gore and chick boobs. Maybe some Tom Sizemore boobs, but that didn’t happen. What I’m saying is that it is hard to get super analytical about a movie whose premise covers the entire movie. Truckers are taking a mystical demon as part of some ancient pact. Unfortunately, someone sets the creature free.

Normally, I don’t care for the SyFy channel movies. That being said, this one is so pleasantly weird that it earned a repeat viewing from me. Tom Sizemore is one of those guys that can always elevate material by playing up the oddity of a situation. No one else in the cast comes close to that approach, but it isn’t like they had to do it. That’s the sad fact about these movies and I hate that there remains a collection of film fans that continue to support this schlock. B and Z movies have their place, but they need to meet a certain level of quality. Quality exists across a wide spectrum, but a defined sense of canon still matters. I guess that I’m just a snob like that. Let me know what you guys think on Twitter, the FB or just shouting at me on the street. So many locals are starting to use that last option.

The Blu-Ray comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is pretty solid. The 1080p transfer sports minimal digital noise. The DTS-HD 2.0 master audio stereo track keeps all of the action upfront. In the end, I’d recommend a rental or stream.
