THE PLOT THUS FAR

Following a childhood dream, brothers Rick and Marty Lagina, embark on a quest to find treasure on Oak Island, off the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. With family, local explorers, and historical experts, they explore the island’s landscape and mythology. Known for its sinkholes and caves, Oak Island lends itself to many mysteries, and is possibly linked to pirates, the Knights Templar, buried treasure, secret booby traps, and a curse of death. There is mystery here but what is it? For more than two centuries, people have explored the secrets of this island, but all have failed; some have died. This documentary series follows the Lagina brothers as they sift through the debris of land, sea, and legend to find the answer.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Curse of Oak Island” felt more like a documentary than a series. If they do get a second season, I’m not quite sure where they can go, unless they change the subject matter. Oak Island has been subject to myths and folklore from Canada to New England. Some think that pirates dumped treasure there, while others stretch and make assumptions that the Knights Templar had something to do with it. That’s a long hike for the Knights Templar to make a quick trip.

Treasure hunting is always interesting. However, there has to be a push for it to happen. While I like watching the Lagina brothers live their dreams, so much of the footage feels either staged or repeated throughout the life of the show. The theories are fun, but that’s all they are. At best, this entire project could’ve been boiled down to a feature length documentary.

The DVD comes with featurettes and bonus footage as the special features. The A/V Quality is sharp for a reality series. The standard definition transfer really kicks it up a notch to the point that I believe an HD master must be in existence. The Dolby 2.0 track creates an excellent environment. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
