“Crazysexycool” is a look at the humble origins of the famous 90s girl group. However, the film quickly delves into the typical TV movie melodrama. The film is such a mixed bag, as everything plays so rushed just to cover the bases of TLC history. Left Eye steals focus at times, as she had the biggest news making moments outside of the group. Then, there’s the focus on how the group together. Everything keeps getting batted back and forth with little concern for narrative coherence.
TLC went through a ton of tragedy, but they managed to come out on top. By on top, I mean the surviving members got a mix of reality series and fading into obscurity. What’s weird is that in 2 hours and 28 minutes, nothing major happened. The Behind the Music special where Left Eye talks about burning her man’s house to the ground carries more emotional gravitas and background than anything in this movie. Plus, there seems like a weird drive to make Pebbles come across bitchy, yet approachable. How many people involved in TLC got to be producers on this movie, as it feels like a hodge podge created to not offend anyone. That compromise doesn’t make for a good movie, as it seems confusing to those of us that might not have followed TLC that closely. I guess that fans will love having a moment to look back at the music of their youth.
The DVD comes with archive footage, interviews and a featurette as the special features. The A/V Quality is typical for a TV movie. The transfer doesn’t get much to show off. Plus, the Dolby track isn’t that expansive. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to TLC fans.
