“Confession of a Child of the Century” wants you to experience a young man’s despair in real time. For a two hour movie, it felt like it was 12 hours. Charlotte Gainsbourg does her best to elevate the material, but somehow Pete Doherty finds a way to drag it down. But, he’s doing what is needed for the role. No one should like Octave. While it’s not great that Octave’s mistress left him, he’s such a creep that it doesn’t matter. This is a period piece about unpleasant people wanting to keep your focus. But, what’s the difference between this film and “Barry Lyndon”? Well, it comes down to the characters onscreen and the nature of the film. Kubrick handled similar people with a greater degree of panache, while this film almost let the performance take over the narrative. That’s a lot to handle.SPECIAL FEATURES
