RENOWNED ACTOR JEFFREY COMBS’ ACCLAIMED PLAY “NEVERMORE – An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe” JUST ADDED TO SLEEPY HOLLOW INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OCTOBER 2019
Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival (SHIFF) is honored to announce the addition of Jeffrey Combs’ acclaimed, live one-man Edgar Allan Poe show, NEVERMORE, as one of the festival’s major events at the historic Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, New York.
The performance will be featured at the festival, which takes place October 10-13, 2019. Check www.sleepyhollowfilmfest.com and the Tarrytown Music Hall for forthcoming information on NEVERMORE’s showtime and date as it becomes available.
Directed by Stuart Gordon, written by Dennis Paoli and starring Jeffrey Combs, NEVERMORE is a critically heralded experience that has delighted audiences for more than a decade. Hailed as “a landmark performance” by the L.A. Times, Combs has thrilled crowds across the country with his dynamic and revelatory portrayal of the legendary Poe.
This marks NEVERMORE’s Westchester County, NY, premiere, an event made extra special by the area’s bicentennial celebration of Washington Irving—a contemporary of Poe who was, from Poe’s perspective, also a rival. Combs recalls in a recent River Journal article, “I don’t think they ever met. I take dark delight in pointing out that Poe doesn’t have very nice things to say about Irving. Specifically, about Irving’s penchant for always having a moral to his stories while Poe was often criticized for being without morals.”
“SHIFF celebrates the Hudson Valley’s wellspring of American history, of classic literature, and the continuing legacy of supernatural writings and cinematic works that it has inspired,” says fest co-founder Taylor White. “We’re excited to have NEVERMORE as part of the festival because it encapsulates so many of these ideas—not to mention it’s a fantastic show, at the perfect time of year, in the perfect venue. We can’t wait for the crowd to experience it!”
As Combs added in the River Journal, “Poe was truly one of America’s great writers. I’m honored every time I step on stage and recite his beautiful words.”
SHIFF, a celebration of outstanding genre cinema in the cradle of the American supernatural, takes place in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, NY, October 10-13, 2019, and features an exciting line up of film premieres, special screenings and live events.
‘SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK’ DOC CREEPS INTO THEATERS AND VOD THIS SPRING
Scary Stories, the highly anticipated documentary about Alvin Schwartz’ iconic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book series, will debut in select theaters beginning April 26 via Wild Eye Releasing.
Explore the history of one of the most controversial works of modern children’s literature: The best selling teen classic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which scared a generation of young readers and became one of the most banned books of modern times. Scary Stories creates both the ultimate celebration and dissertation of this iconic piece of horror literature.
Following the limited theatrical release – which includes Los Angeles, New Orleans, Columbus, and Texas – Scary Stories will be available on VOD May 7 with a DVD release set for July 16.
Cody Meirick’s film features more than 40 interviews, from family members of author Alvin Schwartz, to fellow children’s book horror authors like R.L Stine (Goosebumps) and Q.L. Pearce, to folklorists, artists and fans discussing the impact that the books have had on both themselves as well as the culture at large. The documentary also explores the various times in which the books were banned or targeted by parent and religious groups as ‘satanic’ or otherwise too macabre for its targeted teen scholastic audience.
Penned by Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a three-volume series consisting of short horror stories for pre-teens and children that were adapted from American folklore and urban legends. Because of some of the violent illustrations and the subject matter, parent groups, religious organizations and school boards had the books pulled from libraries and schools at various times. A feature film adaptation of the books, produced by horror icon Guillermo del Toro, is due in theaters this summer.

Greenwich International Film Festival to HonorEva Longoria Bastón and Bobby Walker Jr. as 2019 Changemakers
Greenwich International Film Festival announces the honorees for the 5th annual Changemaker Gala, which will take place on May, 30, 2019 in Greenwich, Connecticut. The Changemaker Award honors artists who have used their public platform and the power of film to further positive social change. This year, activist and actress, Eva Longoria Bastón, will be honored for her work to empower Latina woman and girls through the Eva Longoria Foundation. Bobby Walker, the Community Changemaker honoree at the 2019 festival, will be recognized for his work supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. Past Changemaker honorees include Renée Zellweger, Christy Turlington Burns, Freida Pinto, Trudie Styler, Abigail Breslin, Harry Belafonte, Mia Farrow, and Ashley Judd.
Award-winning actor, producer, director, entrepreneur and philanthropist Eva Longoria Bastón (“Desperate Housewives,” forthcoming “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) established the Eva Longoria Foundation in 2012. The Foundation’s mission is to help Latinas build better futures for themselves and their families through education and entrepreneurship. Through its programs in STEM education, mentorship, parent engagement, college scholarships and entrepreneurship, the Foundation has impacted the lives of more than 23,000 Latina people in the United States and Mexico. Longoria Bastón is a founding member of the Time’s Up movement that addresses systemic inequality and injustice in the workplace, and a powerful voice for the representation of women and people of color in media. Longoria Bastón was named “Philanthropist of the Year” by The Hollywood Reporter and honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at Variety’s annual Power of Women Luncheon.
For more than 100 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich has been devoted to preparing young people, through enrichment opportunities and supportive relationships, to be responsive, caring and productive community members. The organization provides high-quality, diverse and robust programming for children and teens ages 6-18 throughout the school year and remains open during school holidays and winter and spring vacation periods. The affordable After-School Programs and accessible summer camps ensure that every child, no matter what his or her family’s financial situation, can participate in positive activities that build self-esteem in a safe, nurturing and supervised environment. The Club changes lives every day by helping young people grow up to reach their full potential.
“I’m honored to be recognized by the Greenwich International Film Festival because it bridges two aspects of my life that I’m passionate about: impactful philanthropy and phenomenal film,” said Longoria Bastón. “The Greenwich International Film Festival’s commitment to gender parity furthers our shared vision of equal and diverse representations of women in media. The Festival goes beyond film to promote the important work of organizations like the Eva Longoria Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich that are making a difference in our communities.”
“I am honored to receive the 2019 Community Changemaker Award! I am grateful to everyone at the Greenwich International Film Festival for believing that the work we do at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich is helping to produce the next generation of leaders. By providing access to opportunities to every child in Greenwich, especially those who need us most, we believe that future success is achievable by all,” said CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, Bobby Walker Jr.
“I am thrilled that the Greenwich International Film Festival will be honoring Eva Longoria Bastón and Bobby Walker as Changemakers,” said Wendy Stapleton, Chairman of the Board, GIFF. “Eva is a committed advocate for underserved communities. Her philanthropic track record is formidable, and she has worked to advocate for women, the Latina community, people with disabilities, children with cancer, farmworkers and more. She will be accepting the award based on her work to educate and provide opportunity for Latina women and girls. Eva understands the power of her celebrity and has leveraged it time and again to help those less fortunate. Bobby Walker is the incredible leader of The Boys and Girls club of Greenwich. Through his tireless work he has helped to make our community a better, more inclusive place. Bobby and Eva embody what it mean to be true Changemakers.”
Greenwich International Film Festival will celebrate its five year anniversary from May 29-June 2, 2019. Tickets for the Changemaker Gala go on sale today and will be available for purchase at greenwichfilm.org. The Festival’s full film slate will be announced May 3. The May 30th Changemaker event, sponsored by Betteridge, will include a cocktail reception at Betteridge followed by a black-tie gala at L’Escale in Greenwich, CT. Kathie Lee Gifford will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
