CLIMBER, THE

THE CLIMBER REVIEWED

“The Climber” finds Joe Dallesandro as the worst criminal. He gets his friends killed, his motorcycle is destroyed and he loses money for his bosses. But, this poor schlub keeps finding his way back into someone’s good graces. If you don’t know Joe Dallesandro from his Warhol films, the appeal might diminish for you. That being said, I wish Little Joe did way more movies like this. Who doesn’t love a movie about a gross idiot botching everything?

In a better movie, The Climber would’ve been shot in the back of the head and dumped in an alley. However, this film finds its heart by keeping this guy’s dumb journey pushing forward. It’s only when the titular character forms his own mafia out of vengeance that we find something fun. The finale violence is rough, but it fits that Poliziotteschi brutality. Hopefully, Arrow will dig deeper into that classic well. I’m not holding my breath, but this recent Borowczyk renaissance is pretty startling.
