CITIZEN KOCH

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A documentary that follows the money behind the rise of the Tea Party.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Citizen Koch” is a look at how the rise of the Tea Party and the Citizens United ruling undermined democracy in America. The directors take you through the lives of the daily opposition and support for these endeavors. We also get enough time to examine the impact that these decisions have on citizens and can have on a long enough timeline. Some have complained that this documentary doesn’t go after the Koch Brothers enough. Merely just using them as puppets in the larger complaint against financial influence on American politics.

Campaign finance is so rotten in this country, that I’m not sure what will ever be a permanent fix. That doesn’t mean that everyone should stop trying to fix it. However, we should look at the framework and rhetoric that allows such decisions as corporations are people. Other documentaries have the made case for the decision, but all arguments lack a sense of humanity that make it relatable to the common voter. As shown in “Citizen Koch”, the act of allowing corporations to cast political sway is just one more dagger in the back of Lady Liberty. I know that a healthy portion of my readers will feel that this is just a matter of doing business in America. Unfortunately, that argument falls flat against rising political upheavals that have toppled regimes for less in foreign nations. America’s not so different, why should we put up with the same old schlock?

The DVD comes with a mini-documentary, featurette, extended/deleted scenes and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is what you would expect for a political documentary. The transfer is flat, but solid for standard definition. The same can be said for the Dolby 5.1 surround track. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to those on the Left.
