“Churchill” reminds of the kind of hour long dramatic specials that used to air on PBS. Tack on another 30 minutes and pad out longer shots to get this movie. John Slattery and Brian Cox play amazingly off each other. However, there’s nothing new to Eisenhower and Churchill squabbling. What makes this film count is seeing Brian Cox work his way through Churchill’s mind. Winston Churchill easily became a caricature, but Cox finds a real truth to the material.
The film skirts over bigger issues with what happened. What matters is that while history got stepped on a little bit, the motivations behind D-Day are fully explored. War is messy and Churchill knew that the Allied forces had to take a decisive stand. Sure, he consults with others to make up his mind. But, the truth is that the final call will be upon him. The film doesn’t strive for any easy answers, but he swings it.
