“Chuck” is quite an odd biopic about Chuck Wepner. Sure, it follows Wepner’s major fight with Muhammed Ali and then it turns into melodramatic fare. The wife doesn’t like the fact that he wants to have all of the women and do drugs. But, Ron Perlman seems to be using the makeup to turn into an Uncanny Valley like troll manager. Jim Gaffigan and Michael Rapaport are also almost unrecognizable in the film.
It’s a weird stylistic choice throughout the movie. When the material is slim, you get to watch Naomi Watts and Elisabeth Moss get period hair. Then, it’s another supporting actor in chub makeup and a ton of latex. It’s weird that IFC took a shot on the movie. Middlin’ sports movies don’t quite lend themselves to that Indie vibe. If you’re a fan of Liev Schreiber, I’d recommend the film to you.
