“Chavela” uses the bulk of a 1991 interview to frame a documentary about the rise of Mexico’s first singing lesbian icon. Chavela Vargas was a trendsetter, but not many know about her. While the bulk of the documentary is an informative introduction, real knowledge is only gained from the archival segments. It’s not easy to break the mold in the early 20th century, but Chavela explains the need. Filmmaker Pedro Almodovar explains how she became his muse, but his segment feels like fan service. But, a person like this deserves that kind of fandom.
