“Carrie” is one of my two favorite teen movies. The other is “Welcome to the Dollhouse”, so I tend to skew negative. Standing as the first Stephen King book to film adaptation, director Brian DePalma found a certain truth behind King’s words. While a direct translation of the book wouldn’t appear until a much later NBC TV adaptation, DePalma knew what to excise and emphasize. The result was a Hitchcock influenced film that looked like the most brightly colored of Italian horror. Plus, that score by Pino Donaggio is astounding.
Sissy Spacek is a revelation in this film. But, look at the rest of the cast. Buckley, Soles, Allen, Travolta, Katt and everyone else was firing on all cylinders. While pig’s blood was a little bit extreme, I totally buy that these kids would torture a telekinetic outsider. As a kid, none of this made any sense to me. Hell, I kept waiting for Professor X to come and rescue Carrie.
But, that never happened. While we could wax poetic about Carrie forever, there’s a reason why it’s a classic. It’s emotional horror tale that connects to one of the most vulnerable times in human life. Stephen King used to tap into terror in that way without having to force a Dark Tower tie. Amazing work all around.
